Source – Florida Gators dismiss secondary coach Ron English, Torrian Gray

Florida fired secondary coaches Torrian Gray and Ron English, sources told ESPN on Friday, confirming a report by Florida.247sports.com.

The Gators ended in penultimate country among the FBS teams, with 28 touchdown passes allowed this season. They gave up 30.8 points per game, the maximum they have allowed since surrendering 41.2 points per game in six games in 1917.

Florida closed the season on Wednesday with a 55-20 loss to Oklahoma at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl. The Gators, who played 11 real freshmen in defense in that game because of opt-outs, problems with COVID-19 and injuries, gave the Sooners 684 yards, the highest number allowed in the program’s history.

The fall in Florida’s defense this season was a stark contrast to 2019, when it finished seventh national in scoring (15.5 points per game) and fifth national in sacks (49). The Gators finished 20th in the national defense score (20 points per game) in 2018, Todd Grantham’s first season in Gainesville as a defensive coordinator.
