Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday screwed up the pronunciation of Kamala Harris’ name during her oath as the country’s next vice president – and the Twittersphere was quick to respond to the error.
In administering the official oath – “I, Kamala Devis Harris …” – Sotomayor emphasized Kamala’s second syllable, instead of the first.
Harris, 56, repeated the oath, but with the correct pronunciation of his name, emphasizing the first syllable of Kamala.
“So in this historic moment and the greatest achievement of this woman’s career, Sotomayor incorrectly pronounced Vice President Kamala Harris’s name,” wrote a Twitter user.
“tfw sotomayor mispronounces his name during his oath,” wrote another.
“Oooof. Sotomayor misspelled Kamala’s first name. How did it happen?” read another tweet.

The error evoked the memory of former President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, when Supreme Court President John Roberts accidentally quoted the 35-word oath out of order.
To dispel any doubt that the mistake invalidated the Obama presidency, he and Roberts held an additional oath ceremony the next day, without errors. It was not clear whether Harris or Sotomayor would make a similar move.
