Sorting Gamecocks position by position

South Carolina football gets a low score after a season of two wins.

The Gamecocks, mostly in 2020, fought consistently on both sides of the ball, resulting in a 2-8 record in their SEC-only campaign. There were some good points, like a top 15 win over Auburn earlier this year, but a streak of six losses in the game season is what fans remember.

This slippage resulted in the dismissal of coach Will Muschamp in the middle of the year, despite financial losses in the athletics department due to COVID. Mike Bobo would fill the final three games of the season, but South Carolina was not competitive for most of that period.

The Gamecocks’ last chance to get back on track and end the year in a positive way never materialized, as the South Carolina bowling game was canceled amid a surge in COVID on the coaching staff. The two wins were the lowest in a season since the 1999 no-win campaign.

With that said, there were obviously areas of position that exceeded expectations and some that fell far short. The Gamecocks saw a relatively unknown running back explode to lead the league in races, a secondary that did not live up to the hype, and a quarterback room that was high and low throughout the season. There were certainly some great individual performances, but the team never managed to pull themselves together week after week.

Let’s take a look at each position, assessing where the South Carolina football team stood out and where it needs striking improvements towards 2021.
