Just a few months ago, Sony announced its new line of Bravia XR TVs for 2021, including OLED and LCD models. Several state-of-the-art models will include a Cognitive XR Processor that attempts to mimic the way your brain processes images by searching each video frame and choosing the most important zones to optimize.
Now, new TVs are starting to ship, including their 65-inch Bravia XR Master Series A90J OLED with the new internal chip. The incredible levels of OLED black and advanced AI processing won’t come cheap, as the tag price starts at $ 3,999 (Amazon, Best Buy), although the 55-inch model is a little cheaper at $ 2,998 (Best Buy, Amazon). Of course, for that price you could get the 65-inch OLED (Amazon, Best Buy) from last year, albeit without the increased processor and other improvements.
If you don’t want to use OLED, there are cheaper LCD models available on the X80J line with standard Sony image processing (but always reputable), 4K, Android TV and even the extra high-quality Bravia Core streaming service. The 55-inch version costs $ 950 (Amazon, Best Buy), while the 65-inch version is available for $ 1,149 (Best Buy).
One thing to keep in mind with the new TVs is that they include HDMI 2.1 features, but just like the 2020 models, players will have to wait for my favorite: VRR. The variable refresh rate is available via Xbox consoles and PC video cards, but not the PS5 at the moment, and keeps the screen in sync with the system output to eliminate tears and chatter. When it works correctly, it’s incredible, and Sony said it will come to these TVs in a future software update, but has not set a deadline for that.
