Sony’s Airpeak drone makes its debut at CES 2021

During its presentation at CES 2021, Sony gave us a glimpse of its first drone: Airpeak. And since Sony is essentially synonymous with sharp, cinematic image quality, it makes sense that Airpeak will first cater to professional photographers and videographers when it launches this spring.

The drone project was initially announced in November via a press release, but Sony clearly wanted to wait for a special occasion like CES to launch it in all its glory.

Details are still scarce, but Sony has revealed that the Airpeak is the smallest drone to mount and pilot a DSLR or mirrorless camera (specifically its own line of Alpha mirrorless cameras). With the Sony drone, content creators can use sturdier cameras to capture aerial images, rather than relying on integrated cameras that come equipped with most drones.

Sony says that even with a more robust camera attached to it, the Airpeak is still “capable of dynamic shooting and accurate and stable flight”. To prove this, the company also provided images of Airpeak in action.

Throughout the video, you can see Airpeak capturing aerial photos during a road test of Sony’s Vision-S – the concept car that was launched at random last years CES.

Despite its debut at CES, Airpeak is still a work in progress. Before its launch in the spring, Sony plans to continue testing it, putting it to the test by “engaging in co-creation activities” in an effort to get as much feedback as possible for the final version.

With the time it took Sony to finally launch a drone, hopefully the wait will be worth it.
