Sonic Prime will be a collaboration between SEGA and Wild Brain Studio, as the two companies are jointly dealing with the production, distribution and licensing of the series, alongside the creators of Ben 10, Man of Action Entertainment, who will act as showrunners and executive producers on the project, which was accidentally provoked at the end of last year.
The series based on the beloved video game – which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year – is said to be based on the momentum generated by the iconic character after the release of the film Sonic the Hedgehog last year, with an entirely new adventure that aims to “match the scale and the scope of the epic adventures synonymous with the Sonic franchise. “
“Sonic the Hedgehog is an icon of global entertainment that has captivated audiences since its video game debut in 1991,” added Ivo Gerscovich of SEGA. “With over 1.14 billion game units sold and downloaded to date, an exciting film, a robust licensing program and more, SEGA’s iconic hedgehog continues to surprise and delight audiences worldwide. We are excited to partner with WildBrain, Man of Action Entertainment and Netflix to speed up this new animated chapter in the Sonic franchise. “
“This premium franchise is ideal for the capabilities of WildBrain and is already inspiring great things from our talented creative teams,” said WildBrain President Josh Scherba. “We witness firsthand the enduring popularity of this brand due to the strong and constant global demand for our library of legacy Sonic series. We look forward to bringing new and exciting Sonic content to fans, both new and old.”
In addition to Netflix’s Sonic Prime, released in 2022, a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie is being worked on with Jeff Fowler, who directed the 2020 film, reportedly returning to direct the Sega Sonic-oriented project from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled to enter theaters on April 8, 2022.
