Some schools cancel face-to-face classes on Wednesday due to snow

How winter storm warnings and winter weather alerts are in place across much of Utah from Tuesday night to Wednesday, schools are evaluating whether to conduct face-to-face classes.

So far, the Canyons School District has announced that it will conduct remote learning only.

An email sent to parents and guardians said:

  • Wednesday, February 17, 2021 will be a day of remote learning for all students due to the forecast of heavy snow and dangerous road conditions. CSD is following the recommendation of Utah transportation officials to avoid traveling on the roads on Wednesday morning. This means that all schools and district offices will be closed during the day, but instruction will continue according to new state rules that allow school districts to treat “snow days” as days of remote learning. The move to distance learning, instead of dispensing with classes, benefits both students, by maintaining continuity of teaching, and families, by alleviating the need to adjust their schedules to accommodate replacement days, which can disrupt the education holidays and summer. This ad is for one day only. Parents will be notified if remote learning is extended for additional days. If you have questions, please see our website www.canyonsdistrict.org [track.spe.schoolmessenger.com].
  • Expectations of emergency closure and remote learning:
    • If bad weather is expected, teachers will work with students to ensure they have the materials and tasks they need to learn at home.
    • On remote learning days, elementary school students will work independently with a parent or guardian to complete the tasks and learning expectations communicated each week by their teacher using instruction packages or logging into the CSD Canvas learning portal.
    • Elementary and high school students will log in to the Canvas panel for each of their classes and work on their regular course schedules.
    • Teachers will be available on remote learning days by email and will connect with students through Canvas and Zoom or Google Meet.
    • Extracurricular activities – sporting events and practices, classes after classes and rehearsals and theatrical performances – will be canceled unless the road conditions improve enough to allow these activities to be carried out safely.
    • We understand that inclement weather can cause Internet and power interruptions. If you lose power or Wi-Fi access at home, contact your teacher or school to report the interruption and continue to work on the previously assigned learning activities.
