Some Manhattan Starbucks closed on Sunday due to expected protests

MANHATTAN (WABC) – Selected Starbucks stores in Manhattan were closed on Sunday due to expected protests.

A Starbucks employee said that, with great caution and with the safety of the partner and the customer in mind, the decision was made to close the stores.

Eyewitness News stopped at two Starbucks stores and both had signs affixed to their windows saying they were temporarily closed.

Operations are expected to resume on Monday.

So far, no major protest or disturbance has been reported in New York.

In the meantime, some state capitals are closed, fences have been erected and extra police have been placed in state homes across the U.S., while authorities are preparing for potentially violent demonstrations in the coming days.

The intensified security measures were intended to protect government seats from the type of violence that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building while Congress certified the Electoral College vote.

The FBI has warned of the potential for armed protests at the nation’s capitol and in all 50 state capitol buildings as of this weekend.

Some social media messages targeted demonstrations on Sunday, although it was unclear how many people might turn up.
