Microsoft, one of the most important targets of the supposed Russian hacker group behind SolarWinds’ recent cyber intrusion, announced on Thursday that spies were able to access some of the company’s source code used to build products software,
The good news for the tech giant is that no damage was apparently caused, according to the Seattle-based company.
“We detected unusual activity with a small number of internal accounts and, upon review, we found that one account was used to view the source code in various source code repositories,” wrote Microsoft on Thursday in an update on the hack. . “The account was not permitted to modify any engineering code or systems and our investigation confirmed that no changes were made.”

Thousands of corporations and government agencies were affected by the cyber espionage operation, which inserted malicious code into Solarwinds’ flagship software product, based in Austin, to scan the core networks of companies and government.
American officials blamed Russia, but the Kremlin denied involvement.

The company said that in addition to its own code, its investigation “found no evidence of access to production services or customer data” and “also found no indication that our systems were used to attack third parties”.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

Solarwinds said 18,000 customers were affected by the hack, including many Fortune 500 companies and several government agencies.
The massive operation was discovered earlier this month, when cybersecurity company FireEye revealed it had been hacked. FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia said the attack was “by a nation with high-level offensive capabilities”.

“They are highly trained in operational safety and executed with discipline and focus,” he wrote in a blog post on December 8.
“They operated clandestinely, using methods that oppose security tools and forensic examinations. They used a new combination of techniques not witnessed by us or our partners in the past.”

Meanwhile, Solar Winds has been hit since news of the attack was released. Last month, the company’s shares fell more than 34%. In addition, companies like Truist Securities and Baird downgraded SolarWinds’ shares from a purchase to maintain them, with both anticipating stock price targets falling to around $ 15. The stock closed on New Year’s Eve at $ 14.85.
