Snowstorm for N. Illinois tomorrow; Observing impacts near the State Line

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dry air disrupted snowfalls on Saturday night, but most caught between 1-2 ″ of snow in southern Wisconsin. The totals were much lower west of Madison thanks to the drier air. As expected, people along the state’s border saw the least amount of snow. Attention is focused on the next weather system, which will leave the south-central plains tomorrow.

A low pressure system under development will move the NE to the Midwest and the Great Lakes on Monday. Southern Wisconsin remains on the north side of the track – along with most of northern Illinois. A heavy strip of snow settles in this region tomorrow afternoon. The snow should last through the night until Tuesday and may even last until Tuesday night. This long-lasting event can drop 6+ ”of snow in much of the Chicagoland area and northern Illinois.

The big question is – will we see any of this? As of now, it looks like it’s in the southern tip of Wisconsin – especially counties and cities along the state’s border can see up to 2 inches of snow. Totals decrease considerably in Madison and there will be an abrupt cut in snow totals north of the subway. However, the models have been inconsistent with the storm system’s trail. Any move to the north or south can drastically alter snow totals. Light to moderate snow can start in Madison on Monday night and continue until Tuesday afternoon. Along the state line, this snow can be more moderate and sometimes heavy. Higher totals are expected in this region. NW winds will increase – leading to gusts and gusts of snow. Gusts can reach 25 mph.

A winter storm alert will be issued tomorrow for northern Illinois counties. Traveling to northern Illinois will be difficult after the constant snow starts tomorrow afternoon. No winter weather headlines were issued for Wisconsin counties until Sunday night. We will continue to closely observe the system tracking.

The highs on Monday will reach 20 degrees. As the snow clears on Tuesday, the clouds remain in place. Wednesday offers another opportunity for some gusts of snow. Travel accruals and impacts will be minimal, if any. The sun bursts with high pressure to end the week. The highs reach 30 degrees next weekend.
