Snow continues overnight, over 250 flights canceled – NBC Chicago

Some sites have seen more than eight inches of snow this weekend, but even more is on the way, as a weather system is expected to remain in the area for much of Sunday.

A winter storm warning will remain in effect for most of Sunday, with the warning set to expire at 6 pm.

Over 250 flights canceled at Chicago airports due to snowstorm

As snow continues to fall in the Chicago area, more than 250 flights were canceled at the city’s airports on Sunday.

According to the Chicago Aviation Department, at least 190 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport starting at 2:30 pm on Sunday. Flights that are taking off have an average delay of 23 minutes, according to the CDA.

In Midway, at least 70 flights were canceled due to bad weather, the department says. Delays there are less than 15 minutes.

Winter storm warning canceled in several western counties

A winter storm warning, originally scheduled to last until 6 pm, has been canceled and replaced by a winter weather warning in several counties west of the city of Chicago.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning was canceled in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb and LaSalle counties.

Northwest Indiana is also being hit hard by the storm, with Demotte in Jasper County reporting 9.7 inches of snow. Crown Point in Lake County recorded 21.5 inches of snow during the storm.

Over 100 canceled flights at Chicago airports

As of 8:45 am on Sunday, 88 flights were canceled in O’Hare, while another 54 were canceled in Midway, according to the Chicago Aviation Department.

Sunday forecast: snow, snow and more snow

In some locations west and south of Chicago, snow totals over 6 to 9 inches have been reported, according to the National Weather Service. At the NWS office in Romeoville, 9.5 inches of snow was recorded starting at 7 am on Sunday morning, and more is expected, as Lake Michigan winds help to supply additional totals in the northern portions of the NBC 5.

Snow will begin to end in the western suburbs in the early afternoon, with the city of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs immediately watching the snow continue until late at night, according to current forecast models.
