On the eve of Super Bowl LV, the cold opening of “Saturday Night Live” satirized how some of the big TV advertisers might try to capitalize on the politics of the moment – in a misguided attempt to make “all viewers feel welcome”.
“In these times, what you stand for means more than ever,” says a dark narrator in the first fake ad in the sketch, while a montage of historic moments in black history and the Civil Rights Movement flashes on the screen.
“We learned once again that freedom is not free,” continues the narrator. “But we must always strive for equality and always seek … Cheez-its. Cheez-its – historically delicious.”
“What the hell ?! Was it a Cheez-its commercial?” Cast member Keenan Thompson, who plays one of the five CBS Super Bowl commentators in the draft, asks incredulously.

However, commentators promise to “balance the so-called progressive announcements”.
“We are exhibiting some with a more conservative bias,” a panelist assures viewers.
In the next fake commercial, Pope John’s pizza targets conspiracy theorists.
“We know you want real ingredients, no additives, no preservatives and no child sex trafficking in the basement,” said a man in the ad’s narration, mocking the 2016 Pizzagate’s bizarre conspiracy.
The narrator adds, “Sorry, Democrats, you’re going to have to bring your son sexual pizza at Hillary’s Pizzeria,” while showing a fake pizza restaurant logo with a photo of Hillary Clinton.
The commercial ended with the announcer reminding diners to stop today with his “Q-Pon”, a reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory.
SUPER BOWL LV: 10 ADS TO WATCH
“Is that a pizza advertisement ?!” Thompson angrily asks again after the ad ends.
The program then makes a distorted version of the coronavirus vaccine in the classic Budweiser Clydesdale ad in which one of the Clydesdale horses kicks a syringe – in the style of a field goal. The syringe flies out an old woman’s window, inoculating her in the arm.
“It’s good!” the speaker applauds. “Better to take the second dose … of cold and refreshing Bud Light.”
But as – as the announcers always repeat – this year’s game is all about inclusion, they also feature an anti-xxxxx ad from Budweiser.
Once again, it is a classic ad: this time, Budweiser’s toads that squawk: “No. Trust. Pfizer”.

At the end of the draft, commentators make their predictions for other Super Bowl ads.
Since Planters killed Mr. Peanut last year, cast member Mikey Day suggests that the Kia Hamsters are going to “commit a suicide murder”, Beck Bennett expects excitedly that the sexy woman Green M&M “finally becomes totally porn”, and Chris Redd predicts rapper Cardi B will make a “disturbing” announcement called “Wet A – Pepsi” – a parody of his spicy hit “WAP”.
Saturday’s show featured “Schitt’s Creek” star Dan Levy as a guest presenter and Phoebe Bridgers as the musical guest.
