Last night, “Saturday Night Live” started with a sketch with Britney Spears (Chloe Fineman) as a talk show host offering celebrities in trouble a place to apologize for their public mistakes.
Spears’ show, “Oops, You Did It Again,” hosted Senator Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant), Governor Andrew Cuomo (Pete Davidson) and actress Gina Carano (Cecily Strong), who made headlines last week for several crimes.
The first was Cruz, who was there to apologize for abandoning his voters for Cancún in a week when the state fought a crisis brought on by a deadly winter storm and widespread power cuts. “I have some hot water, which I am told that no one in Texas has,” he told Spears sheepishly.
On Wednesday, Cruz traveled to Mexico with his wife and daughters for a family vacation, at one point blaming his daughters for the trip, saying “wanting to be a good father, I flew with them last night and I’m coming back this afternoon. “
The “SNL” skit had Spears informing Cruz that many people online called him a coward. His answer: “Let me ask you something, would a coward have the Cojones blame your young daughters for your actions? The whole trip was the girls’ idea. “
“Well, as someone who used to be blamed for other people’s problems when he was young, he might leave his daughters out because it could really mess with their heads,” replied Spears, receiving applause from the audience.
Next on the “SNL” apology tour was Davidson as Cuomo; the governor received a reaction for underestimating deaths in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. “They were counted as hospital deaths, which is basically what happens at Disney World,” he said. “We just did the Disney thing, right?”
Finally, Strong as former “The Mandalorian” star Gina Carano joined the skit to apologize for comparing the situation of conservatives in Hollywood with the people living in Nazi Germany. “I would never have made that Nazi comparison,” she said, “if I had known that everyone would be so Nazi about it.”
“Do you feel a victim of the culture of cancellation?” Spears asked.
“Yes, absolutely,” said Carano. “And was I canceled by Disney? Disney is the moral basis? Did you hear Br’er Rabbit’s accent on the Splash Mountain tour recently? “
“Well, if you die from that, they’ll move the body,” Cuomo reminded her.
