At the last installment of Polygondeep dive into creating classic fighting games, veteran developer Toyohisa Tanabe revealed that his team at SNK was experimenting with crossovers already in King of Fighters 98.
“The team ended up doing a construction of King of Fighters 98 with Ryu and Ken [from Street Fighter] in it, ”said Tanabe. “This is not something that many people know. [B]yes, just for fun, before Capcom vs. SNK it was one thing, I was playing as Ryu and Ken in King of Fighters 98.
“We did this on the development hardware, so of course it was never on a physical cartridge. Besides, I’m just remembering that now, but it wasn’t just Ryu and Ken that we ended up playing with. We put in Dragon sphere characters, like Son Goku, too. “
Fighting game crossovers may be a little outdated now, but in previous years Capcom vs. SNK brought together his two huge studios, these types of games were the imagination. Hope so, to like Samurai Shodown V Perfect, an internal construction of King of Fighters 98 with Ryu, Ken and Goku can still be found collecting dust somewhere on some SNK developer’s storage unit.
