Sketchy iPad mini 6 leak points towards Touch ID on screen, punch camera

Supposed CAD-based renderings of the iPad mini 6

David Kowalski has leaked several devices in the past twelve months, including the Google Pixel 5, Galaxy Note 20 and iPhone 12 Pro. More recently, he shared renderings of the iPad Pro (2021), and now it’s back in partnership with Pigtou alleged share images from iPad mini 6. Certain elements of this leak seem very incomplete, so be sure to get these supposed CAD-based renderers with a good pinch of salt.

The iPad mini 6 can offer a punch camera

The sixth-generation iPad mini will feature a much larger 9.1-inch screen while maintaining virtually the same dimensions as its predecessor. To be more precise, the thickness increased by 0.15 mm, but the height and width remain unchanged.

Making this possible are the fine settings that are now around the screen. Ming-Chi Kuo suggested a iPad mini 6 with a full-screen design last May, so the device shown above and below is in line with these predictions.

But things get interesting (and much less credible) when you take a closer look at the panel. Unlike other single-screen iPads, the next-generation iPad mini reportedly features punch technology.

It is being used for the selfie camera located above the screen, which is the most obvious use case. But Apple has never used this before, and its commitments to uniform frames and carvings make it a strange move.

Of course, it can be the beginning of a new design language for the company, so design can be accurate.

Apple’s next iPad mini could be the first with Touch ID on the screen

The least likely part of these images can be found in the bottom half of the screen. Specifically, the next generation tablet is represented with a cutout for a Touch ID fingerprint reader.

It is not clear whether this is for illustration purposes to confirm the presence of a Touch ID implementation under the screen, as expected in the iPhone 12S later this year, or if Apple is planning a big cut.

But if the latter is what these renderings imply, this seems extremely unlikely, especially for Apple, which tends to avoid unconventional designs at all costs in favor of something simple.

The iPad mini 6 should arrive in the first half of 2021

The iPad mini 6 is expected to arrive in the first half of this year, potentially at an event in late March alongside the iPad Pro (2021) line and a third-generation iPhone SE.

It must be powered by the A14 Bionic, currently used in the iPhone 12 series, and include a lightning port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, both found on the iPad mini 5.

The rest of the tablet’s external package consists of an aluminum body with a small camera at the rear, an on / off button at the top and the volume keys on the left side of the frame.
