Singer Vehicle Design

If you know Porsches, chances are good that you know Singer Vehicle Design. The California-based customizer has been reimagining the classic Porsche 911s for more than a decade, transforming the 964 generation cars into modern works of art that combine vintage style and modern materials into attractive packages designed precisely to meet the desires of their owners.

But while they have modified many 911s on exceptional trips throughout the year, all of these cars generally share one thing in common: they are designed to be driven on the sidewalk.

Well duh, you may be thinking, is where are the Porsche 911 supposed to live! Well, not necessarily. The 911 (and related 959) also played rally cars from time to time; as a result, an automotive subculture has emerged around them. Leading the trend: Richard Tuthill, whose UK store specializes in 911 builds with rally specifications and other Porsche-based off-road activities.

Now, Tuthill has joined forces with Singer to create what the latter is calling the Off-Road Competition Study: a customized 911 that combines the former’s off-road sensitivities with the latter’s impeccable attention to detail. As you can imagine, it’s incredible.

The All-Terrain Competition Study, or ACS, was prepared at the request of one of Singer Vehicle Design’s loyal customers, designed around the mission of creating a vintage 911 capable of competing in off-road racing like the Baja 1000 and the Dakar Rally and, you know, just having an explosion on the earth.

Like all of Singer’s custom builds, the ACS is based on a Porsche 964 chassis – in this case, one from the 1990 model. In addition to the skeleton, however, not many components are left in stock.

The most notable change, of course, is the ride height: the ACS is much taller than an original 911, thanks to a long-haul suspension with double shock absorbers adjustable in five directions for each wheel. BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires involve 16-inch wheels, ready to face the pain of off-road racing.

The power, of course, comes from a boxer-six. In this case, it is a 3.6-liter turbo unit, which produces 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque in basic form, but can be increased if necessary for competition.

All of that power flows through a five-speed sequential gearbox for all four wheels, with limited-slip front, center and rear differentials helping to make the most of the engine’s power. Monobloc four-piston steel brakes slow things down, while a hydraulic handbrake is also there for dirt drains.

Inside, occupants are protected by a protective cage to FIA specifications and held in place by FIA certified racing seats. There is a race-ready navigation system, as well as a “rehydration” setting for both occupants, because holding a water bottle is for suckers.

As is the tradition for singers, the body is made of carbon fiber. Not only does this reduce weight, it also makes it easier to replace body panels that were damaged during off-road or to access the bottom of the car for quick repairs – something you might want when you’re 50 miles from anywhere in Baja California with an injured car.

In what can only be described as a hell of a flex, the faithful Singer enthusiast who ordered the ACS really did. two versions: one painted by Parallax White (a characteristic Singer tone) made more for off-road rallies and a second painted by Corsica Red which is more adapted for fast driving on pavement.

If you like what you see here, well, good news: the person who commissioned ACS generously agreed to make the design available to others interested in asking Singer to customize a 911 in a similar way.

Of course, don’t expect it to be cheap. “The price of catering services based on the results of the Off-Road Competition Study will depend on the specification chosen by the owner,” says Singer’s press release – but considering Singer’s regular constructions they tend to cost around half a million range of dollars, don’t expect it to be anywhere near accessible.

Then again … if you have money, can you think of a cooler off-road toy?
