Mayor Marty Walsh and the Boston City Council joined the Massachusetts delegation to Congress and Governor Charlie Baker in denouncing President Donald Trump and the crowd of his supporters who invaded the United States Capitol over fraudulent allegations of electoral fraud.

“The turmoil that unfolds in the capital of our country is unfathomable,” wrote Walsh and the council in a statement. “Witnessing this type of violence and aggression in response to fair and legitimate election results is disgusting, and President Trump has done nothing but encourage this behavior – today and for a long time. He proved, once again, to be unable to assume the responsibilities of the Office of the President of the United States.

“The First Amendment is a fundamental value of this country that guarantees everyone’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” continues the statement. “Peacefully is the keyword. In Boston, we are united in reporting this violence and we ask everyone, regardless of their personal policy, to choose peace over violence. We must be better than that. We pray for those who are currently in prison, as well as for those who are injured in Washington DC Our thoughts are with Mayor Bowser, the security forces and the first respondents who try to resolve this situation as quickly and peacefully as possible. “
