Showtime’s next “Dexter” revival cast Clancy Brown for a lead role, Variety confirmed.
Brown will star as Kurt Caldwell, the show’s main villain. Caldwell is described as the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. He fulfilled the American dream by stopping driving large platforms, just like his father did, to now own several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone – he is a true man of the people. If he is protecting you, consider yourself blessed. But if you upset Kurt or hurt someone he likes, God help you.
Brown joins the previously announced series leader, Michael C. Hall, who will return as the titular serial killer. The role also brings Brown back to Showtime, where he previously played the Waylon character “Jock” Jeffcoat in the hit series “Billions”.
Brown is no stranger in the role of villains, starring as the monstrous Kurgan in the movie “Highlander”, as well as the evil Captain Hadley in “The Shawshank Redemption”, among many other roles. He is also known for his lighter side, having voiced Mr. Siriguejo’s character in “SpongeBob” for over 20 years.
He is represented by ICM and Pop Arts Management.
Little is known about the plot of the revival of the limited series “Dexter”, which was commissioned at Showtime in October. The premium cable ordered 10 episodes, with production scheduled to start in 2021 for a fall premiere. Former Clyde Phillips showrunner is also set to return.
Hall starred as Dexter Morgan throughout the show’s original eighth season on Showtime. Dexter was a serial killer who specifically targeted other serial killers while also holding a job as a blood spatter specialist for the Miami Police Department.
The show received significant critical acclaim during its airtime, including several Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for best drama series. Hall was also nominated five times in a row for the Emmy and Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for his work on the series, winning the Golden Globe in 2010. John Lithgow won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his lead role in fourth season of the show. The series also won a Peabody award in 2008.
Produced by Showtime, “Dexter” will executive produce by Phillips, Hall, John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro and Scott Reynolds.
TV Line first reported Brown’s cast.
