Shooting in Muskogee, Oklahoma: Five Children and One Man Killed

A suspect was taken into custody after police were called about the shooting on Tuesday in Muskogee, police spokeswoman Lynn Hamlin said.

The police did not immediately disclose the names and ages of the victims or suspects. Investigators are trying to find out why the deaths happened, she said.

“We will not believe it is random, but we simply do not yet have details of ‘why’ or ‘what happened’,” Hamlin told reporters.

Police received a call around 1:30 am on Tuesday about people being shot at the house in Muskogee, a city of about 37,000 people about 40 miles southeast of Tulsa.

“When (the police) arrived, they saw a suspect leaving the residence with a gun in his hand. One of our policemen shot that suspect, missing him, ”said Hamlin.

The suspect ran away, but police arrested him after a short chase, Hamlin said.

Inside the house, police found four children and a man dead, along with an injured child and injured woman – all shot – the police said.

The injured child and woman were taken by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital, where the child was pronounced dead, Hamlin said.

The woman was being treated for life-threatening injuries at the hospital, police said.

Investigators believe the victims were family, Hamlin said. Investigators do not know whether the suspect is related to them, she said.

The suspect was being held at Muskogee County Prison on Tuesday morning, according to Hamlin.
