“We are not the only ones.”
Everybody Loves Bridgerton – except the Golden Globe, apparently, which despised the show entirely this year.
When it comes to honoring black films and TV shows, there are many things that seem to be wrong with the Golden Globe – specifically, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes for awards every year. If you need to catch up with what’s going on, read this and this.
After a recent report that HFPA has rejected opportunities to hold press conferences for Black TV shows and films like Girls trip and Bridgerton, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes – who is also the executive producer of Bridgerton – shared his experience with HFPA on the show.
Rhimes confirmed reports that the HFPA rejected a press conference for Bridgerton “Until it was a ‘surprise hit'” – although I note that some of your other programs, from Gray for Scandal and How to escape murder, were genuine successes.
She also stated that, despite the way the HFPA handled Bridgerton, they even asked her to perform “in person” at this year’s Globes ceremony.
“That’s why the HFPA house is on fire. They lit the flame with their own ignorance,” continued Rhimes before continuing with another tweet: “And I’m the lucky one. Most importantly: think of all the great talents and shows that never had a chance.”
Rhimes is not the only Black breeder who recently spoke about the alleged HFPA discrimination. Yesterday, Ava DuVernay too shared his experience with the voting body when your Netflix limited series When they see us was under consideration.
HFPA, for its part, promised to have “13% black members” before the next Golden Globes ceremony. It’s a start!
