After serving as a coach for Michigan’s tight ends for the past three seasons, Moore’s coaching duties will now be focused on as the Wolverines’ new offensive line coach. It replaces Ed Warinner whose contract expired on January 11 after performing this function for the past three years. Sources say there has been discussion about staying at Ann Arbor as an analyst, but there is no confirmation that such a role has been agreed so far.
Sources told The Michigan Insider that Moore will also add the title of co-offensive coordinator.
They speculated that Moore was running to join the team of his alma mater Oklahoma, but he would have decided to stay in Ann Arbor before things progressed in Norman. Lincoln Riley eventually promoted from within to replace the departing coach Shane Beamer.
Moore now takes on the position he played himself, having been a highlight at Community College in Butler County (Kansas) before moving to Oklahoma for his last two years. He went on to appear in 14 games as an offensive guard for the Sooners, helping them win two Big 12 Championships and playing two BCS bowl games.
Moore later transitioned to coaching in 2009, joining the Louisville team as a graduate assistant. He then made the leap to full-time assistant in 2012 as Cardinals’ tight end trainer, the position he has trained every year since. After two years in Louisville, he spent the next four years at Central Michigan, where he added the title of associate coach and recruiting coordinator in his last season.
Then came the leap to Michigan in 2018, where he received praise from Jim Harbaugh for his coaching and recruiting acumen. The recently extended head of Maize & Blue will seek to leverage these two characteristics, giving the 35-year-old more responsibility.
Thanks to his time as a tight end coach, Moore is obviously well versed in the blocking scheme, but he also has a broad understanding of the attack as a whole, having served as Josh Gattis ‘eye on the sky’ offensive coordinator. He is also known for his ability to connect with players, a trait that Harbaugh is almost certainly looking to capitalize on with so many players in the line already in or ready to join the team.
Moore also proved to be a powerful recruiter during his time in Michigan. He is credited for leading the potential five-star land collection Daxton Hill and JJ McCarthy. In addition, Moore served as the primary recruiter or was heavily involved in courting potential clients as Karsen Barnhart, AJ Henning, Braiden McGregor, Darion Green-Warren, Roman Wilson, Raheem Anderson, and Donovan Edwards. He ended the recent initial subscription period classified as no. 8 recruiter nationally according to 247Sports. Now, in addition to being the top man in the main recruiting territories of Michigan and Illinois, he will be instrumental in dating all the attackers on the line. It is a position where many of the most intense recruitment battles and some of the most difficult losses have occurred in recent years.
