Shakira sells complete music catalog to UK Hipgnosis Songs Fund

Shakira is the latest artist to sell her music publishing rights.

The Colombian artist, whose music has earned her three Grammys in her career, has transferred her entire catalog of 145 songs to Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited, a UK-based investment company.

The company announced the acquisition on Wednesday via Twitter and welcomed singer “Hips Don’t Lie”, 43, on her intellectual property list, calling Shakira “one of the most serious and successful songwriters of the past 25 years”.

“Welcome to the Hipgnosis @shakira family,” wrote the founder of the company Merck Mercuriadis on Wednesday. “What no one should take for granted is that Shakira is one of the most serious and successful songwriters of the past 25 years, having written or co-written virtually every song she has ever recorded.”

Shakira released her first album in 1991 at just 13 years old. She reached international fame in 1995 with the release of her third album, “Pies Descalzos”.

However, it wasn’t until 2001, when Shakira made her foray into American pop music, that she dropped her American language debut, “Laundry Service,” and as the phrase says – the rest is history.

WHOLE BOB DYLAN CATALOG OF SONGS SOLD FOR THE UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP IN MASSIVE LANDMARK DEAL

For her life’s work as a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, Shakira has won much international acclaim, winning three Grammy Awards, 12 Latin Grammys, four MTV Video Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards and 39 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

She also has six Grammy nominations to her credit.

So far, the “She Wolf” artist has sold 80 million albums worldwide – and her latest collaboration, “Girl Like Me”, with the famous Black Eye Peas, has also been included in the Hipgnosis deal.

The sale price of the catalog has not been revealed and the investment group has no publishing rights on any of Shakira’s future recordings at the moment.

“Being a composer is an achievement that I consider equal and perhaps even greater than being a singer and artist,” said Shakira in a statement. “At 8 years old – long before singing – I wrote to make sense of the world. Each song is a reflection of the person I was at the time I wrote it, but once a song is released in the world, it belongs not only to me, but also to those who appreciate it ”.

Shakira added: “I feel humble that composition has given me the privilege to communicate with others, to be part of something bigger than myself.”
