Several inches of snow before the arctic cold, more snow this weekend

DETROIT – It is remarkable what a strong cold Arctic front can do.

At 1:30 am – when I left home for work – the temperature was around 30 degrees (0 to 1 degree Celsius). Now, at noon, that temperature has dropped to a few (-8 degrees Celsius) in most areas, and when you take gusts between 25 and 35 mph into account, chills across the area are around zero (-18 degrees Celsius).

As expected, lake-effect blizzards have spread across the state and are primarily affecting the northern half of the area.

Although the National Weather Service has allowed the Winter Weather Warning to expire in time for Monroe and Lenawee counties, it has been extended until 7:00 pm for the rest of our counties. And the flood alert for the St. Clair River continues until 12 pm, as ice blocks continue to cause significant flooding in some areas.

Winds will reach between 25 and 40 mph this afternoon, and those gusts will not decrease below 30 mph until tonight. It will continue to be windy during the weekend, but not as windy as today.

Temperatures are not going to rise today due to the Arctic air flow. We will continue into adolescence (-8 degrees Celsius) this afternoon.

The chills will drop to almost zero (-18 degrees Celsius) this afternoon, and this will be the start of a series of extremely cold days.

Today’s strong wind that blows in the almost open waters of Lake Michigan has generated some streaks of lake-heavy snow on the west side of the state that, as I mentioned above, extended eastward to the northern half of our area. These streaks of snow are expected to begin to subside tonight.

If you are elderly or have a health problem, I strongly advise you not to try to remove snow with a shovel. Call a snow service to do this for you or maybe give the child on the block $ 20 to do it for you – it will be money well spent – and this message is very personal to me, as the father of a childhood friend died of a heart attack trying to remove heavy, wet snow that he didn’t need.

The snow show lessens on Friday night and it will be very cold, with minimum temperatures of -11 degrees Celsius.

Predominantly cloudy and with a breeze on Saturday, with highs in the upper range of teenagers (-7 degrees Celsius), with chills between zero and 5 degrees Celsius above zero (-15 to -18 degrees Celsius).

A snowy area will cross the area on Saturday night and early in the morning on Sunday. Computer models do not entirely agree on their positioning, but new models only suggest accumulation for most of us. It’s a little early to be specific, but as a general perspective, it looks like this will be a three to three inch snow, with the best chance of getting seven centimeters being south of I-94, most of us (the center part of the area) getting two to three inches, and the areas to the north a little more than an inch.

Low on Saturday night around 10 degrees (-12 degrees Celsius). Highs on Sunday in the middle of the night (-8 degrees Celsius), with chills during the day on Sunday around zero (-18 degrees Celsius).

The best chance of seeing more snow accumulated is from Monday night until Tuesday morning (this can take a few more inches – stay tuned). We are going to get a little warmer earlier in the week as the highs return to low 20s (-6 degrees Celsius), but a resurgence of Arctic air looks set to return on Wednesday and beyond.

In short, plan a very, very cold week ahead.
