Several chances of winter headaches for Alabama in the coming days

Alabama may face several threats of freezing rain in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.

There may be some snow thrown in there as well, for some.

It is still a low confidence forecast, as is the case most often with Alabama winter rainfall, but the threat is sufficient to warrant an alert. Keep an eye on the forecast over the weekend.

“February in Alabama is really a difficult time in terms of the weather,” said the weather service in one of its forecast discussions on Friday morning.

Northern and central-northern Alabama are the main areas that could be affected, however, meteorologists in southern Alabama are also keeping an eye on things. At the moment, it seems that it only rained in the southern half of the state.

The first round of potential winter precipitation may arrive late in the evening on Saturday morning and mainly affect northwestern Alabama.

The second, and more substantial, chance could arrive on Sunday night and last until Monday, according to the weather service. And it could affect all of northern Alabama and a decent part of northern central Alabama.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville said a small chance of freezing rain would arrive tonight in northwest Alabama.

The weather service warned that forecast confidence is still low with tonight’s weather, but that a light mix of rain or freezing rain will be possible from the end of tonight.

A little ice may be possible on bridges and overpasses and some secondary roads in northwest Alabama, meteorologists said.

Concern about potential ice formation extends south to central Alabama counties of Marion, Lamar and Winston, according to the Birmingham weather service.

Some brief travel problems will be possible before precipitation turns to rain late Saturday morning.

There may be more precipitation during the day on Saturday, but it is expected to be all rain.

The second round of potential winter precipitation will arrive at the end of Sunday and Monday.

It may start as a winter mix of rain and freezing rain, but transition to snow later in the day on Monday, the weather service said. Snow accumulation, if any, is expected to be on the lighter side.

More freezing rain will be possible on Monday, as well as a cold front moving, according to forecasters.

“This winter storm system continues to evolve, but confidence is somewhat increasing that some travel impacts due to this winter mix will develop,” said the weather service in Huntsville.

The driest and coldest weather is expected from Tuesday.

However, there is a chance of more winter antics on Wednesday, according to meteorologists, but it is too early to say whether freezing rain or snow will be a problem.
