When his possibly illegal call to the Secretary of State for Georgia failed this week, President Donald Trump has now turned his attention to his own vice president for help, declaring that Mike Pence “has the power to reject fraudulently chosen voters.”
“Now, to be clear, Pence has no power to simply change the results, despite Trump’s insistence on Twitter today,” said Seth Meyers during his last segment “A Closer Look” on Tuesday. “No, he doesn’t”, the Late night host added. “All Pence must do is tell. Pence cannot change the results any more than Vanna White can change the sentence on the board. “
“Although, apparently, even counting is difficult for Pence,” he continued, pointing to a New York Times report that quoted someone close to the vice president who described his duties on Wednesday as “distressing, saying he would need to balance the president’s mistaken beliefs about the government with his own years of preaching deference to the constitution.”
“Which is like saying it is ‘distressing’ to balance my years of preaching a healthy diet with my four-year-old son’s desire to eat a thousand gum worms,” joked Meyers. “But think about Mike Pence’s instincts, because he really has been through a difficult period in recent years. And now he has to choose between the Constitution and a despicable mafia that illegally calls election officials, begging for votes like a telemarketer. ”
During his final rally in Georgia on Tuesday night, Trump seemed to threaten Pence, saying, “I hope Mike Pence will pass us. If he doesn’t pass, I won’t like him that much. “
“I have a hard time believing that Trump likes Pence even now,” said Meyers. “There is no way for these two to have anything in common besides their desperate desire to exercise power at any cost.”
