Sergey Maximishin, doctor who treated Navalny, died, says hospital

Sergey Maximishin, who was the deputy chief physician at the Omsk emergency hospital, died at age 55, according to the hospital.

“We regretfully inform you that … the deputy chief physician of anesthesiology and resuscitation of the emergency hospital №1, assistant in the department of Omsk State Medical University, PhD in medical sciences Maksimishin Sergey Valentinovich died suddenly”, the hospital said in a statement, which did not mention the cause of death.

Navalny was initially admitted to the acute poisoning unit at Omsk’s No. 1 emergency hospital on August 20, after falling ill on a plane bound for Moscow. The site made an emergency landing in Omsk.

Maximishin did not give a briefing to the press at the time of Navalny’s hospitalization. As the hospital’s deputy chief physician for anesthesiology and resuscitation, he was one of the hospital’s top doctors.

Leonid Volkov, Navalny’s chief of staff, confirmed that Maximishin was in charge of treating the opposition leader.

“Sergey Maximishin was the head of the department that treated Alexey Navalny and was in charge of his treatment – specifically his induced coma,” Volkov told CNN.

“He knew more than anyone about Alexey’s condition, so I cannot rule out the possibility of foul play,” he added.

“However, Russia’s health care system is very precarious and it is not uncommon for doctors of her age to die suddenly. I doubt there is any investigation into her death,” continued Volkov.

CNN is seeking additional comments from local health officials about Maximishin’s cause of death. CNN has no evidence that there was any foul play.

The Omsk region’s Health Minister said in a statement that Maximishin worked at the hospital for 28 years and saved thousands of human lives.

“He brought people back to total reality. We will miss Dr. Maximishin very much. He left very early and because of that the pain of the loss is especially bitter,” said Alexander Murakhovsky in a statement.
