Sequence of fatal accidents continues across the region

ORANGEBURG, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – Five people died in four days in a series of car accidents in the two states.

The last accident was a collision against the road in Orangeburg County.

It happened around 12:20 am on US 301 near Lariot Road, a few kilometers southwest of Orangeburg, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2015 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling north on the highway and a 2004 Honda Civic was traveling south on the northern lanes, according to the patrol. The vehicles collided.

The Civic driver died and the Camaro driver was taken to a local hospital, according to the patrol.

Both drivers wore seat belts.

Previous failures

Monday’s accident came after two deadly shipwrecks in Barnwell County.

An accident on Saturday happened at 11.05 am on Fellowship Road.

A 1999 Toyota Avalon was traveling west when it left the right side of the road and hit a ditch, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The passenger died.

The driver, Dominique J. Banner, 23, was taken to a hospital.

Both wore seat belts.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Meanwhile, the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office said a previous fatal accident happened after one of the vehicles was chased by a police officer.

The sheriff’s agency said one of its units was stopped near the intersection of Patterson Mill and Red Oak Road when the officer saw a vehicle traveling south on Red Oak Road at what appeared to be high speed.

The officer tried to reach the vehicle and saw him enter Kingfisher Road.

He continued behind the vehicle, still trying to reach it, according to the sheriff’s agency.

The officer turned on his blue lights before the vehicle he was chasing collided with another vehicle just ahead of the patrol vehicle, according to the sheriff’s agency.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the vehicle that headed west in a fatal accident on Friday at Kingfisher Road was a 2007 BMW 320.

A BMW passed a vehicle in a no-go zone and went to the left of the center, hitting a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling east, according to the patrol.

The BMW driver died at the scene and the Silverado driver was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries, according to the patrol.

Both drivers wore seat belts.

BMW driver Ena Bynum, 20, of Barnwell, died of head trauma, according to coroner Denise Gibson.

The other driver, Erwin Inabinett, 60, of Barnwell, died of multiple injuries, according to Gibson.

On Friday, a driver died from being thrown from a vehicle that overturned after crashing on the Bobby Jones Expressway in Augusta and crashing into the trees just before noon on the Sand Bar Ferry Road.

Richmond County Judge Mark Bowen said the vehicle was traveling east on the highway at high speed when the driver lost control.

The car got off the road and started to roll over, knocking the driver out of the vehicle, Bowen reported. The 1996 Corvette overturned several times, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:59 am

He was identified as James Dunz, 60, from Grovetown.
