Sequel to ‘Cloverfield’ in development with Batman TV Spinoff Showrunner (exclusive)

Abrams will produce with Bad Robot film director Hannah Minghella. Reeves is not involved in the project.

Cloverfield it was a monster movie, shot in the then popular found footage style to reflect the growing omnipresence of video cameras. He followed a group of 20-something New Yorkers as they tried to navigate the city during an attack by a giant monster. The film was made under the radar and used a viral marketing campaign to spark interest. The tactic worked: the movie, which cost $ 25 million, had a massive opening weekend of $ 40 million and grossed $ 172 million worldwide.

It spawned a “Cloverfield universe” that saw two more modest-budget films, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield paradox, launched in 2016 and 2018, respectively. These films were originally developed as separate films, but were folded under a Cloverfield banner linking them to a story linked with science fiction and monsters themes. When Paradox critically disappointed after being sold to Netflix and with Abrams’s attention apparently focused on his deal with WarnerMedia, it was assumed that the Cloverfield franchise was destroyed. (But no brand in Hollywood really dies, right?)

Details of the capture are being kept hidden in Central Park.

Barton created and wrote the police drama between East and West Giri / Haji BBC Two / Netflix. But he recently made headlines when he took on the role of showrunner for HBO Max’s Gotham City Police Department police show after Terence Winter, the previous showrunner, left due to creative differences.

In the can for Barton is Invasion, an alien invasion film starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer that will premiere on Amazon.

He is represented by ICM Partners, Grandview and the UK’s Independent Talent Group.
