Senator Sherrod Brown asks Hawley, Cruz to resign or be expelled

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senator Sherrod Brown accused Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas of being complicit in the insurrection, calling for his resignation and – if not resigning – his expulsion from the United States Senate.

A day earlier, the Lincoln Project accused Hawley of sedition. The Lincoln Project is a Republican political action committee that actively opposed President Trump’s candidacy for the White House.

The rare appeal to sedition’s political capital sin stems from its opposition to this week’s election vote certification and subsequent takeover of the Capitol by pro-Trump forces. Five people died. Hawley was seen punching protesters outside the Capitol.

Hawley, 41, is the youngest member of the Senate. He served as attorney general in Missouri before being elected in 2018.

Cruz, who has served in the Senate since he was elected in 2012, ran for president in 2016. He defeated Trump in several primaries and openly criticized him. He later became an ally. The Houston Chronicle also asked Cruz to step down for his challenge to the 2020 presidential election results.
