Georgia Republican Party senators struggling to maintain their seats in the second special round are in a difficult position after President Trump demanded that Congress approve $ 2,000 stimulus check payments in support of the coronavirus.
Senator Kelley Loeffler, in a close race against Democratic candidate Reverend Raphael Warnock, said she would consider voting for the new figure, which Democrats originally pushed for the stimulus package if they diverted funds from “unnecessary spending”.
“I will certainly seek to support it if it redirects unnecessary spending towards it,” she said, during a campaign event on Wednesday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
In a speech Tuesday night at the White House, Trump condemned the latest aid package against the approved coronavirus with overwhelming bipartisan support. He asked Congress to send him a “proper” bill with stimulus checks that more than doubled the $ 600 allocated by Congress earlier this week.
After the president’s comments on Tuesday night, Democrats took the opportunity to demand more stimulus checks. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted, “Republicans have repeatedly refused to say what amount the president wanted for direct checks. Finally, the president agreed to $ 2,000.”
“Mr. President, sign the bill to keep the government open! Urge McConnell and McCarthy to agree to the Democrats’ unanimous consent request for $ 2,000 direct payments,” she added in a tweet on Wednesday. “This can be done at noon on Christmas Eve!”

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., said that she and her “squad” colleague, Rashida Talib, Michigan, had already written an amendment to the $ 900 billion aid package to increase funding directed to stimulus checks.

Loeffler and his Republican colleague in the second round of “Peach State,” Sen. David Perdue, voted in favor of the bill on Monday, but their Democratic opponents Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively, asked both of them to support requests for Trump for further stimulus checks.

“As I said from the start, the Senate should have acted on this months ago and support for Georgians should have been much greater,” said Warnock on Wednesday. “Donald Trump is right, Congress should quickly increase direct payments to $ 2,000.”
Trump did not say whether or not he would try to veto the latest coronavirus aid package, although Congress approved the measure with veto-proof bipartisan support.
It is not clear at this point how Republicans in Congress will vote to amend the coronavirus relief bill.
