Sen. John Kennedy: ‘We don’t need more gun control, we need more stupid control’

Senator John Kennedy, R-La., Joined Fox News Primetime on Tuesday to discuss his fellow Democrats’ calls for arms control after a mass shootout at a Boulder, Colorado grocery store, killed 10 people, including veteran police officer Eric Talley.

KENNEDY: Those deaths were terrible. They were horrible. I remember, though, that, you know, America is a great country. We are free and one of the prices we pay for this freedom is that there will always be some people who abuse it. Freedom is risk. We need to focus on how to control that risk. You will not stop the murders until you stop the murderers. But you don’t stop drunk drivers from getting rid of all sober drivers, which is what many of my Democratic friends want to do about the Second Amendment.

In my opinion, we don’t need more gun control, we need more stupid control. How do we do it? We already tried, the Republicans tried. Senator [Chuck] Grassley, senator [Ted] Cruz had a bill to strengthen our national database. We regulate gun ownership in America. If you are convicted of certain crimes, if you are prone to violence, if you have mental problems and want to buy a gun, your name needs to go through a database.

The problem is that the database has huge holes. And many federal and state agencies are very arrogant about sending their names. The Grassley and Cruz project, which I support, would have tightened the database and would have cracked down on people who have guns who shouldn’t have guns. Do you know why the account was not approved? Many of my fellow Democrats obstructed it.
