See why California can’t expand vaccine eligibility for another month

See why California can’t expand vaccine eligibility for another month

March 15, 2021 18:08 by NewsDesk
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – There are growing signs from state health officials that California will not move to the next level of COVID vaccine eligibility for at least a month.

This means that Californians over 50 or those who work in some jobs considered essential may have to wait a few weeks to get even the first dose of protection.

“It’s too early to say,” said Dr. Tomas Aragon, director of the California Department of Public Health. “We will examine the offer, we have analysts who are designing all of this and we will see how many people will be vaccinated. It really helps to determine when we will make the next announcement.”

Meanwhile, California will target its existing supply to those currently eligible, especially in communities most affected by the virus and where vaccine distribution is slow.

For Californians between the ages of 50 and 65 who hope to become eligible sooner or later, it appears that vaccination sites may be closed to them for at least a few more weeks, when states like Texas, Indiana and Ohio have passed their 50s. .

“Here, at least in Northern California, we really have fulfilled everything, the social detachment, the masks,” said Maureen O’Regan, who told us she heard about younger friends and family in Texas who had already been vaccinated. “So, I hate being late on vaccines, when we really did everything we should have done all the time.”

If California does not make the next group eligible for another month, the question remains as to whether the state can really be ready to qualify adults of all ages by May 1, a date announced last week by President Joe Biden.

“So the real question is, when will there be enough vaccine to open up to the general population?” said Dr. Mike Wasserman, who serves on the California Vaccine Advisory Committee. “I think it will be close to May someday, but I don’t know if we know the exact date.”
