See how to get Windows 10 Sun Valley icons now without becoming an Insider

Microsoft is planning a major visual upgrade to Windows 10 in the second half of this year. The so-called “Sun Valley” update is already being tested with Windows 10 Insiders, and the latest build brought a series of redesigned folder icons based on Fluent Design.

Before and after the icons in the Photos folder.

If you want these icons now, of course you can become an Insider, but that is not really advisable on your main machine and would mean frequent installations of experimental software.

However, there is a safe and easy way to obtain the icons without running a beta operating system. The MSFTNext folks extracted the Shell32 and Imageres icons and made them available for download, so now you can easily download the icons and use them to personalize your folders.

To change the appearance of the icon:

  1. Download and extract the icon set.
  2. Right-click on the shortcut you want to change
  3. Select Properties
  4. Select the change icon.
  5. Navigate to where you extracted the icon set and select the icon you want to use.

Not all applications and folders can have alternative icons, but shortcuts can be easily changed.
