Warning: this post contains major spoilers for the seventh episode of WandaVision.

Once upon a time, Marvel fans flocked in multiplexes to watch sold-out displays of the latest blockbuster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the COVID quarantine era, they simply invaded Disney + when the last episode of WandaVision falls and closes the streaming service. It happened overnight when the seventh episode, “Breaking the Fourth Wall”, opened at midnight on the West Coast. Moments later, the outage tracking website, Downdetector, reported thousands of cases of disruption to the Disney + service in the Pacific time zone. We can assume that this was a real life episode of Agatha All Along?

But let’s postpone the climax of the episode – and widely suspect – the Big Bad reveal for a moment, because “Breaking the Fourth Wall” also features a new Big Time hero who will take us directly to the events of Captain Marvel 2. Carol Danvers stayed in the background for much of the season, while Monica Rambeau (Tayonah Parris) struggled with her surrogate aunt’s legacy. In the 1990s, young Monica saw Aunt Carol create the mantle of Captain Marvel and then fly into deep space for future adventures, while she and her mother, Maria (Lashana Lynch), remained trapped on Earth. But the current Monica seems less in love with her childhood hero, perhaps because of her absence after Maria was diagnosed with cancer. Whenever Captain Marvel’s name comes up this season, she visibly backs off and changes the subject faster than Peter Maximoff manages to corner.

Carol returned to Earth for the events of Avengers: Endgame – which occurred three years after Maria’s death – putting her in a good position to be Luke Skywalker’s level WandaVision cameo that Elizabeth Olsen alluded to. And she appears at a key moment in “Fourth Wall”. When Monica’s first attempt to penetrate the Spell barrier on a SWORD mechanical vehicle fails, she decides to go the other way alone. Diving into the static red wall that surrounds Westview, she hears the voices of her mother, her aunt and even Nick Fury echoing in her ears through audio signals raised directly from Captain Marvel. “Your mom is lucky: when they were handing out kids, they gave her the hardest,” says Danvers as Maria gives Hex a last push, her eyes shining just like Aunt Carol’s.

In the continuity of Marvel Comics, Monica actually preceded Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, taking over the mantle after the first version, Mar-Vell, was killed in an innovative comic strip in 1982. Throughout her tenure, she joined and eventually led the Avengers, later passing the nickname Captain Marvel to the son of Mar-Vell and adopting the name of Photon. WandaVision the fourth episode established that “Photon” was Maria’s nickname on SWORD, and the sixth installment clearly mentioned that going through Hex twice changed Monica on a cellular level … as in superpowers. This means that the “Fourth Wall” works both as the origin story of the Photon inside the MCU, and as the prelude to Captain Marvel 2, which Nia DaCosta will direct later this year and is scheduled to hit theaters on November 11, 2022. It’s no wonder fans are anticipating a real Brie Larson participation before WandaVision ends?

If Aunt Carol shows up, it will probably be too late to help Wanda and Monica in their fight against Agatha Harkness, Kathryn Hahn’s magic-prone and definitely bad neighbor. Since the first episode, fans suspected that “Agnes” was Agatha: a powerful sorceress who has a long history with Wanda in the comics. And “Fourth Wall” finally offered confirmation, revealing that everything that happened up to this point – from Pietro’s resurrection to Sparky’s death – was her doing. It is a turning point in the story that viewers liked, even if they were not at all surprised.

After that moment of anguish, West Coast viewers will have a better chance of preparing for more service interruptions when WandaVisionThe penultimate episode of will fall next week. Expect it to start with Photon’s first supervillain battle: a bonus scene in the middle of the credits showed her confronting Agatha’s version of Pietro as she tried to reach Wanda.
