Some very important news has recently dropped, suggesting that Chris Evans will somehow return as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was a big surprise for many, given the end of the Avengers: Endgame. Not to mention Evans’ personal comments on the subject last year or so. Whether it will happen or not is not yet known, but the news is worth seeing how it can happen. And given where we left off with Steve Rogers, it’s very possible that Cap will return for one last race.
The last time we left our hero was in the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame 2019. The Avengers he had managed to gather the Infinity Stones in the so-called time theft and undo Thanos’ snap, while also defeating the Mad Titan and his army once and for all. As promised, the heroes were charged with returning the stones to the place in time from which they were taken, so as not to disturb the balance of time. It was Cap who ended up collecting the stones, taking them to various places in time and space. Still, when Hulk tried to bring Steve back, it didn’t work.
Then we found a much older Steve sitting on a bench by the lake. It turns out that, revealed through a conversion with Sam, he decided to stay in the past after returning the stones to finally live his life with Peggy Carter. Steve presented Sam with his shield, suggesting that he should become the new Captain America and assume the mantle. It was seen by many as the perfect ending to Steve Rogers’ cinematic journey.
But, crucial when it comes to the possibility of Chris Evans’ supposed return to the MCU, Steve Rogers is very much alive. This alone makes it totally possible to bring Captain America back, in some way, into a future MCU project. It is important to note that the reports were specific, suggesting that Cap would not return for a new solo film. Instead, it would appear on other projects. So the easiest way to do that, apparently, would be to bring old Steve back into a future Phase 4 MCU project.
There are some logical places to do this. Perhaps the most logical is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The next live Disney + series will focus on Sam Wilson from Anthony Mackie, also known as Falcon, and Bucky from Sebastian Stan, also known as Winter Soldier. Mackie recently revealed that the show will deal with filling the void left by Captain America, examining who should take his place. Although many of us simply assumed it would be Sam, and very well it could be, that has not yet been resolved. It might make sense for Steve to show up and offer some wise guidance to his young friend on the show. Although the series ended filming and these reports suggest that it will be for something in the future.
If it is not there, the MCU will not be short of opportunities in the coming years. In addition to the many films to come that have not yet been filmed, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: love and thunder, Guardians of the Galaxy, vol. 3, Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania, Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2, among others. Marvel also has many programs underway for Disney +, including Hawkeye, Iron heart, Armor Wars, Secret Invasion, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Mrs. Marvel. And that is what we know.
By the way, there will be plenty of opportunities to bring Captain America back. When looking at the events of Avengers: Endgame, what may make the most sense is actually showing Cap returning the stones over space and time. Six stones. Six episodes for Disney +. This contradicted the idea that Evans’ new contract would not be the main attraction of a project, but would be a way to bring it back without destroying the plot that so satisfactorily ended his character’s arc.
Up to that point, the fans seemed to be divided by the news. Chris Evans has become one of the most beloved elements of the MCU over almost a decade. He turned Captain America into one of the most popular superheroes on the planet in the modern era, which was simply not the case before The First Avenger was released. So, naturally there will be fans eager to see you return. On the other hand, Endgame it served as a great closure for Steve. Those final moments when he finally got his dance with Peggy can, and perhaps should, serve as the enduring memory we all have of Steve Rogers’ cinematography. Bringing it back is likely to tarnish that image to some extent.
Anyway, all of this can be irrelevant speculation. Shortly after the news was released, Chris Evans went on Twitter to address the reports saying, “What’s new for me”. This suggests that he is not close to a new deal with Marvel Studios and Disney. This is not to say that it will not happen, although it strongly implies that the initial reports were at least a little hasty. However, if things go in that direction, there are plenty of options to bring America’s butt back for some more cinematic adventures.
