SEC coaches place two Gamecocks on pre-season All-SEC teams

Basketball coaches from the Southeast Conference voted for eight players from the first All-SEC preseason team and nine players from the second All-SEC team. Two South Carolina Gamecocks entered the list as junior guard AJ Lawson was voted for the first team and second year guard of the redshirt Jermaine Couisnard was voted for the second team.

Lawson, who last week received preseason honors from the media’s All-SEC Second Team, had 23 games with double-digit scores last season, including six 20-point games. He played 10 games with three or more assists, distributing an average of 1.9 per game. Lawson, who is only 196 points from reaching 1,000 in his career, equaled his career record with eight goals scored five times last season. In league games, he averaged 11.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists and had 13 double-digit scoring games. His best performance in the SEC action last season came in Carolina’s victory on the road to Georgia, when he scored 20 points behind seven marks on the field, while making two assists with three steals.

Couisnard led the Gamecocks with 14.8 points per game in SEC competitions last season, en route to the coaches’ honors in the postseason. Overall last season, he averaged 12.1 points, an increase of 3.2 assists from the team and just under one steal per game. Couisnard had 18 games with double-digit scores during his debut campaign, including a 28-point career record performance at Ole Miss in early February. His 18 games with three or more assists were the best of the team, and he scored the first buzzer of his college career, hitting a last 3 seconds to secure a home win over No. 10/12 Kentucky in action at the SEC.
