Seattle woman, 90, walks 6 miles in the snow to get the COVID-19 vaccine

A 90-year-old woman reportedly went through a snowstorm to receive her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, reports The Seattle Times.

What happened?

Fran Goldman walked 10 km – back and forth – through the snow in Seattle to get vaccinated, according to The Seattle Times.

  • Goldman decided to walk to her appointment after she struggled to get one.
  • “I’ve been calling to make an appointment anywhere, every morning, every afternoon and I’m often online at night,” said Goldman.

According to NBC News, she finally found an appointment on Sunday morning. However, a strong winter storm devastated Seattle on Friday and Saturday, which caused a 30-centimeter snowfall in the area.

  • Goldman also walked to the vaccine appointment “in wool pants and a short-sleeved shirt so that the nurse could reach his arm easily,” according to NBC News. She wore a wool jacket, a feather coat and a raincoat to protect herself from the weather.

Goldman ended up getting the vaccination, according to The Associated Press. The whole ordeal surprised his daughter, Ruth Goldman, who lives in Buffalo, New York.

  • “We are outsiders,” she said. “We love being outdoors. I was at Lake Ontario yesterday with a 6 degree thermal sensation. “

Vaccines and winter storms

Coronavirus vaccine shipments will face “widespread delays” due to winter storms that plague much of the country, reports The Washington Post. Winter climatic conditions delayed the distribution of the vaccine, which altered the scheduled appointments. There will also be problems with monitoring vaccine storage locations, reports The Washington Post.

  • “Due to the harsh winter that is currently affecting a large part of the country, the US government is projecting widespread delays in shipments and deliveries of COVID-19 vaccines in the coming days,” Kristen Nordlund, spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he told The Washington Post.
