Seattle Seahawks re-sign Carlos Dunlap; Jarran Reed is expected to be launched or traded

SEATTLE – In a major shift in their defensive line, the Seattle Seahawks are bringing back Carlos Dunlap and leaving Jarran Reed.

A source told Adam Schefter of ESPN that the team must negotiate or release Reed, which will save nearly $ 9 million against the salary cap. Agent Drew Rosenhaus told Schefter that Dunlap’s business is for two years and $ 16.6 million with a guaranteed $ 8.5 million.

Dunlap, 32, became a free agent when Seattle released him earlier this month, in a move that saved $ 14.1 million in cap space, but also left the Seahawks without one of their most impactful defense attackers. .

Dunlap helped unleash the Seahawks’ astonishing passing race when he arrived in a Cincinnati Bengals deal in October, registering five sacks and 15 hits of QB in nine games, including playoffs. He missed a game with a foot injury he played for part of his time in Seattle. He had six tackles and four passes saved with the Seahawks.

To facilitate his trade to Seattle, Dunlap agreed to restructure his contract with the understanding that the Seahawks would free him and let him test the free agency if both sides did not agree to an extension. This restructuring increased its limit number from 2021 to prohibitive US $ 14.1 million.

The Seahawks thought, when they released Dunlap, that they would have a chance to hire him again for a more friendly agreement with the team, which they are doing. One of the reasons why his return seemed like a possibility was his predilection for the Seahawks. He had spoken openly about the organization after the exchange, saying he felt rejuvenated in his new environment.

“I would love to stay in Seattle as long as they accept me,” he said after the Seahawks lost in the wild card round. “It was very clear what I came here to do and what my time interval would be, so now it’s a conversation and I’m open and receptive. You already know how grateful I am to be here. They are very careful. I think it’s a great organization for veterinarians, although I feel young and refreshed as a young player too. I feel like I still have a lot of ball and I would like to end it with an organization like this.

“My two goals are still a Super Bowl and 100 sacks, and I didn’t get any of them. I didn’t win a playoff game. I think we have the pedigree here to do it all next season, and I love being part of it.”

That affection was shown again on Thursday night, when he tweeted his reaction to the deal – with teammate Russell Wilson doing the same.

Dunlap’s 87.5 sacks in the regular season in his career placed him in 12th place among active players, according to the Professional Football Reference. He did the Pro Bowl in 2015 and 2016. Bengals was 0-5 in the playoffs during his time in Cincinnati.

Seattle agreed to negotiate with two other pass-rushers earlier this week, bringing back Benson Mayowa and adding Kerry Hyder. These two more Dunlap, LJ Collier, Rasheem Green, Alton Robinson and Darrell Taylor give the Seahawks a large group of forward players.

But Reed’s expected departure will leave a void within his defensive line.

Reed, 28, has been a full-time starter since 2017, a year after Seattle chose him for the second round outside Alabama. He was known primarily as a run-stuffer for his first two seasons, but then had 10.5 sacks in 2018. He started the 2019 season by serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy and ended the year. with two sacks in 10 games.

The Seahawks gave Reed a two-year deal, $ 23 million last March, betting that he could resume his 2018 form. He had a recovery season with 6.5 sacks in 16 games, but should have almost $ 14 million against the limit. Moving on from Reed will leave behind $ 5 million in dead money, regardless of whether it is via exchange or release. The Seahawks have only three choices in next month’s draft (in the second, fourth and seventh rounds), which gives them an added incentive to find a business partner for Reed.

He signaled his apparent goodbye to the Seahawks on Thursday, writing on Twitter:

Poona Ford, who started alongside Reed in the past two seasons, signed a two-year contract with Seattle earlier this month as a restricted free agent. Bryan Mone was hired as an agent free of exclusive rights. The two other real defensive tackles in the Seattle squad are Cedrick Lattimore and Myles Adams, sophomore players with an NFL experience game between them.
