The Rams may not know who their starting quarterback is until the time of the game. Coach Sean McVay does not plan for anyone outside the organization to know before that, even if the Rams do.
McVay said Tuesday that he will not consider the quarterback’s questions this week as the team tries to determine whether Jared Goff can play with his surgically repaired right thumb.
“I’m not going to make an announcement about who is starting this week,” said McVay, via NFL Media. “I will not answer that question.”
McVay said his schedule for determining the title is “Saturday at 1:39 pm”, one minute before the game starts.
Goff was operated on December 28, the day after he broke it in defeat to the Seahawks, the playoff opponent on Saturday. John Wolford, a former Alliance of American Football quarterback, made his NFL debut with a week 17 victory over the Cardinals.
Wolford became the first player in the league’s history with at least 200 passing yards and 50 running yards in his debut, according to NFL Research. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 231 yards and an interception while running 56 yards in six runs.
Goff will start if he is healthy, said McVay.
“Jared is our starting quarterback,” he said.
The Rams listed Goff as limited in their estimated injury report on Tuesday.
Anyone who starts out as a defender will have the receiver Cooper Kupp back and could have left Andrew Whitworth to return. Kupp is expected to be back on the COVID-19 roster on Wednesday, McVay said, and Whitworth has a “good chance” of playing for the first time since Week 10, when he injured a knee.
