Sean McVay of Rams vague about Jared Goff’s future as a defender

Jared Goff’s future in Los Angeles was questioned on Saturday night, after the Rams fell 32 to 18 for the Green Bay Packers and coach Sean McVay’s comments after the game added to the mystery.

McVay was clearly asked whether Goff, who he named after John Wolford suffered a neck injury in the wild-card game against the Seattle Seahawks on January 9, was the advancing Rams quarterback.

“Yes, he is the quarterback now.”

It is not clear whether McVay was suggesting a possible change in the future. Goff’s contract makes his cut very expensive and he doesn’t have a high negotiation value at the moment, so demoting him to reserve may be the most likely option.

Goff’s performance during Saturday’s division round defeat was not dire – but it was also not enough to defeat Aaron Rodgers.

He was 21 of 27 with 174 yards and a touchdown pass to Van Jefferson at the end of the second quarter, but the game eluded him after Cam Akers’ touchdown race in the third quarter.

“My job is to win the game,” said Goff after the game. “I thought I had done good things, but my job is to win the game. There are no moral victories, especially in the playoffs.”

McVay and Goff didn’t agree at the end of the season, with McVay choosing to start Wolford against the Seahawks against Goff, who he believed was healthy enough to play after thumb surgery.

“We can disagree,” said Goff at the time, trying to calm speculation. “We are two adult men who disagree about the status of my thumb, it is not the end of the world.”
