Congratulations on Sean McEnroe!

The artist, son of actress Tatum O’Neal and tennis icon John McEnroe, married his wife Niamh on September 29 in Sedona, Arizona. The wedding takes place after Niamh moved to Sean’s Los Angeles home in early 2019.

In a statement to PEOPLE, McEnroe, 32, explains why they kept the marriage private for several months.

“We decided to keep it private until now. We went through many challenges and difficulties last year, “says McEnroe.” Niamh was pregnant in the fall, but lost the baby at the end of the first trimester. It was devastating, but in the end it made us closer and stronger. And our bond is better than ever. “

McEnroe revealed the news on Instagram with a loving post about Niamh and their relationship.

“I can’t think of a better way to start 2021 than to share with all of you that Niamh and I are officially Mr. and Mrs. McEnroe,” he wrote.

McEnroe recalled how Niamh was there to support him after he had “one of the worst breakdowns of my life” shortly after they moved in together.

“I don’t remember exactly what triggered me, but it was related to my family and the trauma of my childhood,” he shared. “It was one of the most challenging emotional experiences I have ever had. I remember taking a huge crystal and throwing it as hard as I could through a painting, which also went through the wall, leaving a huge hole.

“I took a ficus plant and completely tore it off at the root. Niamh was downstairs and went up to find dirt all over the rug and me laying my face on it, crying and screaming, with dirt and leaves all over my face and hair clothes.

“She gently and quietly started to put the plant back in place. She took all the broken leaves and stems and swept all the soil and put everything back in the pot. And once she finished meticulously putting everything back in place, she came to me, I don’t remember what she said, but she rubbed her back and spoke very softly, and I loosened my grip on one of the rods.

After explaining how Niamh saved the plant and now lives in their room, McEnroe professed his love for his new wife.

“Niamh gave me a foundation of faith and hope, through her resolute and unshakable example, an ingrained foundation that I was nowhere close to having at the time. Everything I am now owes to her. it is my true love, my base and my source of inspiration, all in one “, he wrote.

“I will love you for life, you and no one else,” McEnroe closed the caption.

The wedding took place days after Sean posted a sweet photo with his 57-year-old Oscar-winning mother, brothers and acting grandfather Ryan O’Neal, 79. In his caption, he revealed that it was the first time that family met together in 17 years.

After thousands of people sent their regards to the family, Sean told People he “didn’t really expect” the worldwide reaction the photo received.

“There are so many people who have been following this family saga for literally 50, 40 years. At a time when there is so little hope now and people are really scared, really oppressed and really having a hard time having faith that things will get better, there is this family and if anyone knows this family, they know that this is probably the last family that will be reconciled, ”said McEnroe.

As for his mother’s reaction to the happy news, he says, “My mom is happy for me and wants us to have a good and happy life together.”
