SDCC 2021 Summer face-to-face event canceled, new Comic-Con schedule at home revealed

Comic-Con is becoming virtual once again. It was no surprise when Comic-Con International decided to move San Diego Comic-Con 2020 to a virtual environment, canceling all in-person festivities. While people in the United States and other parts of the world are starting to get vaccinated against COVID-19, there is still a lot of work to be done before massive meetings like Comic-Con can be held again. On Monday afternoon, it was announced that the San Diego Comic-Con 2021 would be held virtually, canceling the face-to-face convention for the second consecutive year.

The announcement was made through Comic-Con’s official Twitter account on Monday afternoon. The virtual event that will take place this year will probably have a similar configuration to last year’s Comic-Con at Home event, although this edition is a little shorter.

Comic-Con at Home 2021 will last only three days, from July 23 to 25. This may be disappointing for some, but it offers the chance for every day of the festival to be packed with exciting panels and presentations.

“While we regret the postponement of Comic-Con in person, our commitment to this fan community and our celebration of comics and related popular arts endures as an important part of who we are,” says the Comic-Con statement. “As the timing and scope of our larger event strongly influenced our decision to postpone, we believe that launching a smaller in-person event at a later time may be a safer alternative.”

As revealed in the statement, there are plans for a face-to-face Comic-Con later this year. The plan is for a three-day event to take place in San Diego in November, with the entire convention returning to normal capacity in 2022. At the moment, details about the November event have yet to be revealed.
