Change destination No. 2 SC in the US in 2020, says study

The South remains one of the top destinations for newcomers based on the percentage of incoming to outgoing, and South Carolina tops the list of Southern states for internal migration, according to a new study .

Palmetto State ranks second on the list of top mobile destinations in the U.S. last year, according to a United Nation Lines 2020 National Migration Study, which used a minimum limit of 250 moves for its findings.

Moving up four spots from the previous year, South Carolina saw more people moving to the state than leaving, with 64% of all changes being internal.

Most people who moved to Palmetto state came to retire, family or jobs, and two-thirds were 55 or older and earn at least $ 100,000 a year, according to the survey.

Overall, the study found that residents continue to migrate to the South at a rate of 55 percent of internal changes. Other southern states on the top 10 list with ratings from 6 to 10 include North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and Arkansas.

Idaho topped the list at first with 70% internal migration, with Oregon, South Dakota and Arizona filling the ranks for numbers 3-5.

For the third year in a row, New Jersey led the country in people leaving with 70%, followed by New York, Illinois, Connecticut and California, all with 59% or more outgoing movements.

The study also pointed to the effect of coronavirus on people’s decisions about where to live last year, saying that it has accelerated broader trends in recent years for southern and mountain states.

“As more people experience lifestyle changes in the midst of the pandemic, such as remote work, we see that they have more flexibility in where they can live – many choosing to move from urban to more rural areas,” said Eily Cummings , spokesman for United Van Lines.
