SC Senate Committee approves retroactive increases in teachers

COLOMBIA, SC (AP) – A South Carolina Senate committee on Tuesday approved a measure to reinstate some teacher increases in this year’s budget.

The proposal would restore the “gradual increase” increases for teachers, which amount to several hundred dollars a year, given annually as teachers gain experience. Lawmakers halted wage increases last spring due to uncertainty about what the pandemic COVID-19 could do to the economy.

The resolution now goes to the Senate floor for voting. House representatives approved a slightly different version of the measure earlier this year.

The resolution would dedicate up to $ 50 million from the state’s contingency reserve fund to restore increases in the current school year. Teachers would receive that money from school districts later this year.
