The South Carolina Port Authority has significantly updated its forecast for fiscal year 2021, after several months of strong volumes and a continuous recovery.

The new plan projects that the Ports of SC will move 1.385 million containers on the pier in fiscal year 2021, which ended on June 30, handled quay containers.

The new forecast also projects port handling of 243,595 vehicles and a combined total of 176,073 rail movements in inland ports in fiscal year 2021.

Several months of much higher volumes than expected at SC Ports, including a record in November and December, boosted this updated forecast. SC Ports has seen strength month by month in several business segments since September, including containers, vehicles and internal ports.

A robust consumer economy continues to drive volume growth, as many invest in household, mobile and electronic goods during the pandemic.

“SC Ports provided essential supply chain services during the pandemic. The experience and dedication of our maritime community is unmatched, ”said SC Ports chairman Bill Stern. “We are excited to update the 2021 fiscal year forecast after several months of growth as we prepare for a very exciting year, which includes opening the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal and deepening the port of Charleston to 52 feet.”

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of SC also unanimously approved the new management positions.
