SC lawmakers, officials react to mortal attack on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (WMBF) – South Carolina lawmakers offered their condolences and thoughts on social media on Friday after a deadly attack on the United States Capitol that left an officer dead as well as the suspect.

“My prayers are for our officers to work to keep us safe while we respond to the situation at the US Capitol today,” tweeted Rep. Tom Rice.

“My heart breaks for the family and loved ones of the Capitol police officer who gave his life today defending our Capitol,” said Deputy Ralph Norman. “I ask that you, please, keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Congressman James Clyburn also tweeted his condolences after the fallen officer was identified as Officer William “Billy” Evans.

“While we await more information about today’s Capitol attack, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer William” Billy “Evans, whose life was lost today,” he said.

The two South Carolina senators also responded to the news on Friday.

Senator Lindsey Graham called this “another tragic day on the US Capitol.”

“Capitol Police men and women risk everything to ensure that elected officials and our teams can conduct the country’s business,” he said. “God bless you as we mourn yet another meaningless death and injury.”

Senator Tim Scott also provided a statement, saying the staff and interns at his Washington office are safe.

“I am heartbroken by the death of the Capitol policeman, who lost his life fighting to keep us safe,” he tweeted. “We owe a lot to these strong men and women for their sacrifice. My prayers are in full force and your loved ones. “

Former South Carolina governor and UN ambassador Nikki Haley also made a statement about the incident.

“Praying for the Capitol cop who lost his life protecting our Capitol”, she tweeted. “This has been a brutal year for the Capitol Police. Raising their families and loved ones in prayer during this time. “

The attack comes less than three months after a deadly riot in the Capitol building on January 6.
