SC General Assembly set to choose curators at 4 colleges

Updated

COLOMBIA, SC (AP) – The South Carolina House and Senate are meeting in a joint session on Wednesday to select curators from four different colleges.

The highest profile race is for a seat on the Board of Trustees at the University of South Carolina, where former basketball star Alex English is trying to stay in the place he was nominated for last summer after a resignation.

English is challenged by Irmo entrepreneur Kevin Hunter and Robert Dozier Jr., who served as curator before, when he was president of the university’s Alumni Association.

The General Assembly will also choose someone for a large seat on the Citadel Visitor Board. Among the candidates is former state deputy Greg Delleney, who currently serves on the board as appointed by the governor. Delleney served in the House from 1991 to 2018 and graduated in 1974 from The Citadel.

Three other candidates are running for the job. C. Douglas Barnes of Lancaster; Kenneth Davis III of Columbia; and Andrew Helfer from Columbia are all graduates of Citadel

Lawmakers will also choose a new administrator for Lander University. Toni Able, from Laurens, was on the board before, and both she and James Shubert, from Simpsonville, are Lander graduates.

Columbia’s Macie Smith is the only candidate for a seat on the board at South Carolina State University.
