SAWS raises boiling water warning for about half of San Antonio area residents

The San Antonio Water System restored service to 98 percent of its customers, according to a statement on Sunday morning. Still, many areas remain under boiling water warning.

SAWS removed the voluntary boiling water notice for half of its customers on Saturday night.

Most of the secure areas are on the west and north sides of San Antonio. Residents can enter their addresses at https://WaterStatus.SAWS.org/Map to see if the notice has been withdrawn for their area.

And a section on the southeast side should be able to safely get tap water without boiling until tomorrow, according to SAWS President and CEO Robert Puente.

The entire city will have the boiling water warning raised probably on Tuesday, he said at a news conference on Saturday.

Residents whose boiling water warning has been lifted need to flush the pipes before consuming tap water again. Turn on the taps for at least a minute before using to remove any remaining stagnant water, officials said.

The warning was issued on Wednesday with great caution. Since then, the water authority has administered hundreds of tests on its water and discovered the contamination.

“No shortcuts are taken when we talk about testing because we are dealing with public security,” said Puente at the briefing.

Less than 10 percent of SAWS customers are still without water, most outside Loop 1604 on the northwest side.

SAWS closed two of its water distribution centers on Saturday, one at 254 Seale Road and the other at Sea World, or 10349 W. Military Dr.

The remaining five water distribution locations are:

NACO (Drive-Thru) – 13655 O’Connor Road

Mission – 615 Theo Parkway

Maltsberger (Drive-Thru) – 8910 Jones Maltsberger Road

University (Drive-Thru) – 7172 W. Hausman Road

SE Booster (Drive-Thru) – 1208 S. Loop 1604 W.
