Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to referee a Super Bowl

Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl after being named to the seven-player team in the game on February 7.

The National Football League announced on Tuesday that Thomas will be the lower judge in a group led by referee Carl Cheffers.

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Troy Vincent, said: “Sarah Thomas made history again as the first official Super Bowl woman.

“His elite performance and commitment to excellence earned him the right to officiate at the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this deserved honor.”

It is the most recent milestone in Thomas’s career after the 47-year-old became the first woman to officiate an important college football game and a college bowling game before being elected the first female NFL officer when she was hired in 2015.

Cheffers, a veteran of 21 NFL seasons, will be the referee for his second Super Bowl after being responsible for the New England Patriots’ 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl LI in 2017.

The two teams for this year’s competition will be known after Sunday’s Conference Championship.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face the Green Bay Packers on the NFC and defending champions Kansas City Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills on the AFC.
