The next Chains of Domination patch for the Shadowlands expansion of World of Warcraft allows players to fight against Queen Banshee herself, Sylvanas. It is a struggle that is getting ready for years old, and players are finally getting a chance to go to war against it.
Sylvanas is the final boss in the Sanctum of Domination attack that is coming to Shadowlands with the 9.1 update. At BlizzConline recently, we had the opportunity to speak with World of Warcraft technical director Frank Kowalkowski, who offered his thoughts on the long-awaited fight and what players can expect from it.
“It took years to do. This was a very long story arc,” he said. “And going back to Domination. It is appropriate that she is on top of the Domination sanctuary. Sylvana’s own life started at the hands of Domination and she followed this path to eventually align herself with the Warden following the path she took. So I think that it will be a satisfying fight. I think it will be unique. We have some really cool things planned for the players. I wish I could share them now! But the players will soon see what we plan. “
Interestingly, Kowalkowski also said that the outcome of the battle against Sylvanas will have major ramifications.
“The outcome of this fight will be a very important moment, not only for Shadowlands, but also for Sylvanas,” he said.
Before players fight Sylvanas, they will have to go through the Sanctum of Domination, which looks like a truly challenging attack. The raid has 10 bosses and countless encounters, culminating in the fight against Sylvanas.
The game’s main designer, Jeremy Feasel, told GameSpot that players may notice that Blizzard’s developers have implemented some changes and improvements to the new Sanctum of Domination attack. Specifically, Blizzard created the raid with the aim of providing players with greater clarity of the boss’s space around them.
“We have been working closely with our visual effects teams to ensure that we have custom visuals for raid fights and that they really stand out compared to the visuals of the players,” said Feasel. “We are also looking closely at what we call ‘noise’ in the player’s class visuals and the player’s coven visuals, and ensuring that those in a raid space do not replace the boss’s skills. To ensure that we have a level of clarity there . “
As for the meetings themselves, Feasel joked that Blizzard created some “new, interesting and innovative mechanics”, going on to say that there will also be narrative elements woven into raid fights.
“The goal of launching an invasion of 10 bosses is that we have a great story to tell, we have many characters that we want to see in the jailer’s personal torment chambers that may be characters from our past,” he said. “There is a lot to accomplish there. We have a lot of great ideas.”
Finally, Feasel said he is excited about updating Chains of Domination to reach the public testing realm of WoW so that the Blizzard team can collect and examine feedback before publicly distributing it to everyone. There is no word yet, however, about when Chains of Domination can reach the PTR or public servants.
